Topic: Ayurveda & Epigenetics
Abstract: Epigenetics is the process by which the expression of inherited traits is modified by external influences, our choices and lifestyle or other mechanisms without any change to the DNA sequence. Epigenetics describes the effect of all factors (internal and external) that affect gene expression. The expression of the inherited traits (phenotypic expression-Vikruti) is dynamic and keeps changing depending on the type of influence. Epigenetic changes are highly individualistic and depend on which part of the DNA is affected. Ayurveda terms epigenetics as Vikruti- a state of imbalance that requires suitable corrections to restore the true self. In this presentation, I will discuss about Stress and epigenetic changes. Stress of any kind, results in an epigenetic change primarily that affects protein expression which adversely affects physiological function and behavior through adulthood. The magnitude, duration and pathological consequences differ markedly between individuals based on the kind of stress, genetic background, and lifestyle. Research studies show that stress-induced epigenetic modifications will influence behavior, physiological outcomes and disease risk.

Topic: Chronobiology & Ayurveda
Abstract: In 2017 Nobel Prize was awarded to three physiologists who first discovered that cells inside organisms change their function based on the time of day. These physiologists spent decades studying how the circadian rhythm operates inside plants, animals, and people. We now know that when we see daylight, the hypothalamus in the brain sends messages to the cells and systems in the body to alter the way they function. The clock genes inside our cells change the protein pathways of that cell. That’s why your liver, your digestive tract, your brain, and your circulatory system are doing different things at night than they do during the day. The latest research summarizes many of the discoveries that chronobiologists like these have made in recent years and it asks the provocative question, “Is your schedule killing you?” The answer is Yes and How can we adopt the ancient Ayurvedic practices to prevent and reverse this lifestyle epidemic.

Topic: Medical Astrology As a Diagnostic Tool in Ayurveda
Abstract: Medical astrology as a Diagnostic tool in Ayurveda
Medical astrology has a significant role in all branches of Medicine and the Birth Chart of a person gives a clear picture of the influence of planetary bodies on the physical and astral body of a person, manifesting the physical and mental health. Planets have a control over Dosha or Guna of a person and the celestial bodies have vital involvement in the various aspects of a disease like -
a) The type of a disease can be indicated by the involvement of a planet
b) The site of a disease can be indicated by the particular zodiac sign
c) Period of suffering can be indicated by Timeline (Dashas) of a planet
Medical Astrology is useful in assessing the timing, prevention, diagnosis, severity and treatment of a disease and uses four elements i.e. Fire, Earth, Air and Water for understanding the nature of a person. The Astrological Natal chart (Kundali) becomes a blue print that enables treating Doctors to have a better understanding of the physiology in order to design a Holistic approach to achieve optimum Mental and Physical Health.
The Topic would cover as to how the two sciences of life (Medicine) and light (Astrology) blend together and can be used in harmony to provide a greater understanding and deeper application of both. The Science of Astrology works as a tool for mankind to minimize suffering and live in greater harmony with nature. An Ayurvedic Medical practitioner can diagnose undiagnosable diseases, decide the type of treatment from the horoscope of a patient, determine the best time to start treatment to heal quickly and recommend a particular lifestyle on the basis of horoscope to prevent occurrence of disease.

Topic: Maternal epigenetics & fetal life programming of adult onset of diseases
Abstract: According to the Barker hypothesis, the period of pregnancy and the intrauterine environment are crucial and can influence the growth and development of the fetus as well as the child suture postnatal health to develop diseases like hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, metabolic disorders, pulmonary, renal and mental illnesses. The maternal lifestyle, particularly diet, exercise, smoking & exposure to infections during pregnancy, have an important role in determining the risk to develop diseases that manifest themselves both during childhood and particularly in adulthood. Several epidemiological studies have revealed that exposure to an unfavorable environment in early life is associated with a significantly increased risk of later disease, a phenomenon termed ‘early life programming’. Factors that adversely affect the gestational and early postnatal environment such as maternal diseases and their treatments, life-style such as nutrition and activity as well as exposure to pollutants can alter fetal development with persistent effects on health. Several risk factors including overweight, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure track from childhood to adult life, and are linked to adult diseases. Health promotion through Ayurveda during ante natal will help to create optimal intrauterine environment or proper growth & development of the fetus to reduce the risk o adult onset of diseases. Prevention must begin early in the life i.e., maternal and childhood stage in the form of a public health campaign directed towards lifestyle changes of the family / society as a whole.

This individualized program is so successful that many of her clients have achieved maximum healing and vitality after years of chronic problems. Kerry is a published author and a Ted Talk presenter and author of the book the 25-Day Ayurveda Cleanse
Topic: Your Blueprint for Life with Ayurveda
Abstract: Ayurveda means the science of life and is the most ancient health care system in the world that is a complete system for managing all aspects of health as well as spirituality, including methods for increasing longevity, healing disease, cleansing the body, maintaining a healthy weight and spiritual development. So, what are we to make of it today? Don’t be fooled into thinking there’s no scientific basis for Ayurveda. On the contrary, what the ancient sages knew has been slowly proven through the ages. For decades, scientists have known the basic structure of our DNA. Although nearly every cell in the body has the same set of genes, why is it that different types of cells look and behave so differently. The answer is epigenetics, a rapidly growing science that focuses on gene specialization. But did you know that what you eat, where you live, who you interact with, when you sleep, how you exercise, even aging can change which genes can be turned on and off. Ayurveda has always known this. So, if we can reverse a genes state by diet and lifestyle, then we could theoretically cure cancer, slow aging, stop obesity and so much more. Curious to know how different foods and lifestyles can epigenetically influence health? Then let’s look at Ayurveda as science continues to catch up to this complete and life-transforming system of health maintenance, disease prevention, and cure.

Topic: Epigenetics and Ayurvedic Diet & Ayurvedic Therapies for Optimal health and reducing stress
Abstract: Epigenetics looks at the effect of various biological and environmental signals that could affect gene expression. A person’s choice of foods, chronic stress and lifestyle could be a source of epigenetic signals that could modify gene expression in adults and increase the risk for chronic disease states such as Diabetes and Obesity. Stress can also affect a person’s immunity. Stress has been implicated for its role in increased cortisol levels. Some recent studies are showing that that stress can cause new DNA modifications in the brain and increase the rick for neurological problems. The prevalence is on the rise for Chronic Disease states such as Diabetes and Obesity. Understanding the relationship between Epigenetics, diet, lifestyle and chronic stress could help in the identification of key factors to prevent or lower the risk for diseases such as obesity, and diabetes. Also Lot of the recent studies have suggested that consuming certain foods, herbs and spices may be able to modify our genes expression and influencing our health. Ayurvedic nutrition concepts hold the key to a personalized approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic approach through the use of Ayurvedic Therapies could be used as a tool for stress management. Topic: S.E.E.D.S of Epigenetic dynamics – Ayurveda framework
Abstract: Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression (active versus inactive genes) that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence — a change in phenotype without a change in genotype — which in turn affects how cells read the genes. The literal meaning of the term epigenetic is “on top of or in addition to genetics.” Accumulating evidences proves that there are many factors which modulate the system or process of epigenetics; which are grouped together and named as SEEDS by Dr Sathya N Dornala. The acronym includes Sleep (Nidra), Exercise (Vyayama), Environment, Education (spiritual), Diet (Ahara) and Stress (Vichara) & Social connectivity. Of which three factors Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya are collectively known as “Trayopastambha” (Three life supporters). Pattern of epigenetics is like double edged sword. These factors may cause harmful epigenetical changes when SEEDS are not properly maintained and conversely gives highly beneficial effects when SEEDS are duly followed.

Topic: Seasonal Diet, Sleep, Gut Microbiome, and Epigenetics
Abstract: Diet can impact epigenetic changes linked with disease and may modify gene expression patterns through epigenetic mechanisms Gut microbiota can affect the epigenetic processes of the host, consequently causing diseases such as allergy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease autoimmune disease, metabolic syndrome, colorectal cancer, stress-related disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders This possibly results from dysbiosis, a negative alteration of the gut microbiota, as well as changes in microbial metabolites, which are triggered by environmental factors such as diet, age, stress, and pharmacological factors . All these factors affect the expression of genes through epigenetic mechanisms that turn genes on or off, thereby affecting health. In Ayurveda, diet and sleep is an important key to health. Today we can say that diet and sleep alters our microbiome, and a seasonal, varied diet and quality sleep promotes the very significant diversity and balance of our intestinal flora.

He is an award-winning author whose best-selling book The Genie in Your Genes has been hailed by reviewers as a breakthrough in linking emotions and genetics. His follow-up title, Mind to Matter, Reviews the science of peak mental states. He has conducted dozens of clinical trials, and founded the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare to promote groundbreaking new treatments. He shares how to apply the breakthroughs of energy psychology to health and personal performance through EFT Universe one of the largest alternative medicine sites on the web.
Topic: The Genie in Your Genes
Abstract: Dr. Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing. Citing hundreds of scientific studies, he shows how beliefs and emotions can trigger the expression of DNA strands. He focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs. These genes turn on within a few seconds of a stimulus. They can be triggered by thoughts or emotions ("I loved that unexpected gift of roses Bill gave me" or "I'm so mad about what Uncle John said at the Christmas party"). Many IEGs are regulatory genes turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system, such as the production of white blood cells that destroy attacking bacteria and viruses. Epigenetics thus influences our health every day. He coins the new term "Epigenetic Medicine" to describe healing techniques with epigenetic effects. He summarizes the science behind the infant fields of Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, both of which offer promising epigenetic medical therapies, and describes a few of the thousands of powerful personal breakthroughs that are being achieved by therapists, doctors and lay people practicing these techniques. The Genie in Your Genes shows that there is a sound theoretical framework, based on credible experiments, for understanding these astonishing results, and predicts that the insights of Epigenetic Medicine will dramatically advance the fields of both medicine and psychology in the coming decade.

Topic: Epigenetics - a Source of Biochemical Individuality influencing Brain & Behavioral Health
Abstract: While Diet, lifestyle, Environmental stressors and stressful life events create biochemical imbalances, the root cause often goes back to genetics and epigenetics (influence of environmental factors in a person’s life that turn genes ‘on’ and ‘off’ without changing the DNA sequence). Nutrient imbalances (both deficiencies and excess) can alter brain levels of key neurotransmitters and in turn lead to brain and behavioral health issues. Biochemical factors influence our personalities, behaviors, mental health and immune functions and overall health. We are all Biochemically unique. Understand the correlation of Doshas and Biochemical individualities / Biotypes influenced by Epigenetics. Reviewed along with case presentations.

Topic: Epigenetics & Ayurvedic Approach of Healing
Abstract: Ayurveda is a natural holistic medical system with a highly personalized approach. It identifies each individual as a unique entity with a specific constitution and tendencies. The process of disease management in Ayurveda is understanding the unique nature of the individual and the imbalances within his/her body-mind systems and creating a protocol that includes diet, lifestyle, herbs, formulations, mindful practices, and awareness sessions. While all the diseases are affecting the individual’s mind-body systems the entire mechanism of healing is also happening in the same mind-body systems of the same individual including the digestive system, metabolic system, immune system, hormones and so on. Healing is a process of down regulating the tendency disease process and up regulating the body’s own healing mechanisms. Being an Ayurvedic clinician for more than two decades I will be presenting on the epigenetic aspect of the Ayurvedic healing process at this conference.

Topic: Ayurveda for Diabetes - Catch them Young
In view of exponentially growing epidemic of Diabetes, it becomes necessary to diagnose it at the earliest and evolve different treatment strategies. Ayurved has described “Prameha”, whose signs and symptoms match with Diabetes. The basic derangement is in medadhatu (body fats), which can be seen much before the actual manifestation of diabetes. The signs of deranged medadhatu are disproportionate body (Ninditani) and prodromal signs of Prameha (Prameha poorvaroopa). We did Anguli-Parimana Study (measurement of different body-parts) and Prameha Poorvaroopa Study to assess Meda Dhatu Dushti and associated them with adiposity and metabolic-endocrine parameters of diabetes in non-diabetic young population. Further research led to formulation therapeutic food products (internationally patented) for diabetes and obesity. After testing their nutritional contents and glycemic index, clinical trials were carried out in diabetic patients. These studies led us to understand Ayurvedic perspective of diabetes prevention/reversal/management, which goes beyond just blood glucose control.

Topic: Management of stress-induced immune imbalance in working professionals by holistic lifestyle
Abstract: ‘Stress isn’t always bad’. But excessive stress is a causative factor of various physical and mental imbalances. Young corporate employees and other corporate professionals are highly stressed by increased work pressure and disturbed work-life balance.
The body starts to show various signals, but increased workload and negligence makes it difficult to recognize them or even pay heed to them. One cannot control everything at work but what they can control is what they put in their mind and belly. The discussion will be focused on how stress creates a disturbance in overall being of an individual and gradually disables the antigen fighting capability in addition to weakening the digestive fire “Agni”.
It will also focus on how a person with different Ayurvedic biological composition should manage acute and chronic stress, along with various easy to practice lifestyle and dietary modifications.

Topic: Mind and Autoimmunity-An Ayurvedic perspective
The role of mind is often overlooked in the management of any disease in the modern times. According to Ayurveda, healing includes Mind, Body and the Spirit. If only the physical body is targeted as the object of healing, then the healing is incomplete and the disease recurs again and again as the mind and its energy patterns are not balanced. In this presentation we will discuss about the qualities of the mind namely Satwa, Rajas and Tamas and how the mind is responsible for autoimmunity and the possible solutions as per Ayurveda.

Topic: Clearing the Fog: Dealing with Alzheimer’s disease the Ayurveda way
Alzheimer's disease is an age-associated, progressive neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by severe memory loss, personality changes and an overall decline in cognitive function. The cause of Alzheimer's disease is not yet completely defined and efforts to find a cure for it have so far been disappointing. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to India and the Indian subcontinent. While a direct reference to Alzheimer’s disease in the ancient Ayurvedic literature is missing, concepts including forgetfulness, memory loss and brain cell loss have been described. Using the clinical information and the metabolic profiling of Alzheimer's disease individuals that was recently reported, we now describe three subtypes based on the Ayurvedic interpretation of Alzheimer's disease. Ayurvedic profiling of Alzheimer's disease will prove to be useful to identify the specific subtype of patients with cognitive decline and those at risk for such decline from the standpoint of specific subtype-based interventions.

Topic: Panchakarma in the management of Autoimmune and Metabolic Disorders
Pancha Karma is the ancient healing system of Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapies performed to facilitate the removal of deep rooted impurities, toxins and stresses in the mind-body. In ayurveda, Pancha Karma (PK) therapy means “five actions”. A deep cleansing and rejuvenation program for enhancing longevity and vitality, Pancha Karma (PK) is considered a complete, holistic approach to the elimination of the root cause of each and every chronic health problem.
According to Ayurveda, each individual is born with a unique genetic constitution known as “Prakriti”. The irregular lifestyle, unhealthy food and stressful conditions may change the balanced state of Prakriti, leading to various disease or imbalance manifestation.
Today, in the USA, 70% of deaths are due to chronic diseases, not infectious diseases. Acharya Charaka has described that imbalances in doshas can be pacified by shamana therapies (palliation methods) such as administration of herbo-mineral supplements, lifestyle changes, adopting fasting, etc., but deep-rooted imbalances in doshas can be completely eliminated by the administration of shodhana therapies (purification methods), such as panchakarma. We provide affordable pancha karma to everyone and provide maximum benefits using traditional ayurvedic methods. Pancha karma is not for all, but for those who are completely committed and go through all the benefits explained in Pancha karma Program. One must undergo a pre-cleansing program (Poorva Karma), main cleansing program (Pradhana Karma) and post cleansing program (Paschat Karma). The entire program may go up to 30 days and completely rejuvenate and cleanse the mind-body-spirit.
Pancha Karma is a unique personalized experience that helps the mind and body feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Our individual bodies are governed by their unique bio rhythms and circadian cycles influenced by weather and seasons. The accumulation toxins can come from our food, our relationships and our environment, and even from our own thought process. Over the years of time, these toxins may build in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Many of the chronic diseases and illnesses are the result of accumulation of toxins in the body that can impair the functioning of its natural defenses, such as the lymph, circulatory and immune systems.

Evidence based cancer therapy: A review of Ayurvedic literature
Cancer is one of the most challenging conditions affecting modern society. Anti-cancer therapies have long existed in traditional medical practice, evidenced by ancient textbooks in Ayurveda describing various herbs and therapies for cancer management. A re-examination of the Ayurvedic approach is likely to become more prevalent in the coming years due to growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine. Therefore, the objective of this presentation is to describe the available literature addressing research on anti-cancerous Ayurvedic herbs and Ayurvedic treatment strategies for different cancers. A literature search was conducted to identify studies using six databases for relevant articles published through January 2013. Evidence from the literature indicates that Ayurvedic medicines are an effective approach for both the preventative and management aspects of cancer treatment.

Topic of Presentation: Non-pharmacological approach in Cancer
Abstract: CDC ranks cancer as #2 killer in USA. Per the current statistics almost 19 Million people are diagnosed with cancer. While Ayurvedic literature describes various herbs and remedies for Cancer management, still the first choice of treatment today is western conventional medicine. Ayurvedic management sits as a complementary therapy which is mostly focused on reducing the side-effects of conventional medicine. Most central cancer treatments are by Pharmacological interventions. In such scenarios the physicians are reluctant for allowing the patients to have Ayurvedic herbal formulations as a complementary medicine because medicinal herbs would have a potential of interfering the pharmacological action of the conventional medicinal drug. Since Ayurveda is a holistic medical science it offers multiple non-pharmacological approaches. Some of these approaches are diet modifications, certain Panchakarma therapies, Pranayamas, Aroma therapies etc. This paper will discuss about some of these non-pharmacological Ayurvedic approaches which are substantiated by clinical practice and/or with evidence from existing studies.

Love Heals All: Considering Consciousness in Cancer - David Lesinski
Dave Lesinski, R.A.P.,
I have spent over 10 years supporting adults and children in making better life choices to improve health and happiness. In 2002 I co-created and began teaching in the STEPS program which is a therapeutic classroom for kids with severe emotional disability. I used traditional teaching methods coupled with a spiritual practice to support children in making positive behavioral and academic change in their lives. I had the pleasure of being recognized as West Bloomfield School’s (Michigan) elementary teacher of the year in 2008. I was a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention instructor for the 7 years, training over 50 people a year in respectfully dealing with intense crisis-situations. In 2004 I became a Yoga instructor and have taught many styles of Hatha yoga at Yoga Now studio in Michigan. In the fall of 2010 I facilitated my first yoga teacher training. I have also created and taught workshops focusing on chakras, history of yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and more. In 2008 I was introduced to the world of Ayurveda. Two years later I found myself finishing schooling to be an Ayurvedic practitioner. I now enjoy combining my Ayurvedic knowledge with my experiences in the education world to support people of all ages in gaining the knowledge and strategies needed to bring more peace, happiness and harmony into their lives. I support people in blending the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with their modern lifestyle and have a strong belief that disease of any kind can be prevented using natural and holistic techniques. I believe that with proper support, people of all lifestyles, schedules and beliefs can make positive growth towards living a happier and healthier life.
Topic: Love Heals All: Considering Consciousness in Cancer
Emotional trauma, if left unattended, causes imbalance. Imbalance causes disease. To understand this concept let’s first consider a physical body injury. When someone breaks their leg there is a list of lifestyle, routine and behavioral changes that will occur as a result. These changes are not decisions that are made by the individual as much as they are naturally occurring byproducts of the injury.
Here are some examples.
1. Taking medication at specific times of the day
2. Planning ahead when going out
3. Taking breaks and resting the leg to relieve pain
4. Cultivating patience and taking more time
5. Exercising in a certain way, different from before the injury
Again, this list contains examples of natural behavioral byproducts of a broken leg. Without choosing, these behaviors arrived in someone’s life as a result of the physical body injury. These behaviors will not change until the injury is healed.
Our emotional body behaves in the same way with one great exception. Our emotional injuries and the behavioral and routine byproducts are not as easily observed. Here is an example.
A 4th grader is excited to share his “show and tell” item. He has been waiting for months for his turn to be the star student and to share his prized possession. Just as he has planned, he brings in his special toy. This toy brings him so much joy. He steps up in front of the class, pulls the toy out of his backpack with a smile and begins to share. To his surprise, his friends think the toy is weird and start to giggle. The student, shocked and embarrassed, walks off with tears in his eyes.
This event will cause an emotional injury. Just like a physical injury, this emotional trauma will cause a list of routines and behaviors that are a direct result of the emotional trauma. Here are some examples related to the story above.
1. Fear of speaking in front of groups
2. Fear of opening up in relationships
3. Social anxiety issues
4. Feeling disconnected from society or like he doesn’t fit in.
This is a short list of the possible emotional issues that would naturally arrive in someone’s life as a result of the hurtful moment described above. And just like a broken leg, these behaviors will continue until the injury is healed.
People are not aware of their emotional injuries or how they have naturally created the subsequent behaviors and routines. This emotional injury becomes so embedded in us that it paints our personality and becomes a part of who we are. Because we cannot see these injuries, we tend not to notice the injury or the behaviors that appeared as a result.
The larger problem is realized when we understand the truth of human physiology. Through detailed study of our human physiology through the eyes of the Consciousness Model and koshas (layers of human body), we can deeply investigate the roots of all disease. We can see that deep-rooted injuries lying within the mental and emotional bodies can have a “trickle-down” effect painting the health of the physical body.
The result is simple. Emotional trauma causes physical body imbalance and eventually, if not tended to, illness and disease...including cancer.
If we are interested in efficient healing, we must attack the problem at its root. Just like cutting the top off a weed won’t stop it from reappearing in your garden, imbalances will keep showing up in some form or another until the root is snipped.
This form of healing is not new to this earth. However, it is very new to our modern medical movement. Now is the time to blend the intelligence of modern medicine with the “Truth” of Ayurveda. As the patient’s physical body is healed through herbs, medicine and treatments, let’s target the root of the issue through meditation, Vedic psychology, behavioral rasyanas and Energy Restoration Therapy. If there is one thing I have learned from my 10 years of working with people it’s that the truth of the illness always lies within.
When studying the Consciousness model we can theorize that love is at the core of all beings. And like the old adage says…love heals all. When considering cancer we must work with medicines and treatments to heal the physical body as we adjust our lifestyle, to live in reverence, allowing the feeling of love and bliss to absorb into every cell of our body, daily. This does not mean walking away from our jobs, families or homes. This means making some routine adjustments that will allow the love that surrounds us to enter our body every day “powering up” the healthy decisions we make, allowing our whole physiology, including our physical body, to heal efficiently.
When considering Cancer I break this type of healing into three parts:
1. Behavioral and Lifestyle Routine: Making the appropriate medical and dietary decisions necessary to allow the body to heal, including medication, chemotherapy and other treatments when necessary.
2. Daily Spiritual Practice: One that fits the schedule of the individual and combines the following principles is recommended:
a. The spiritual beliefs of the individual
b. An Effortless, mantra-based meditation
c. Including an aspect of Savoring, Reverence and Love
3. Living in Reverence (Behavioral Rasayanas): Quick and simple daily opportunities and activities that create the feeling of love and bliss in the heart of the individual.
The practices above will not only serve to prevent dysfunction in the body but aid in its healing and rebalancing. This is the key to efficient healing. Understanding the “whole human body” and how it works in order to purify, rebalance and bring in the “light”. The Light will take care of the rest.
This “Love Heals All” presentation will provide an overview of this abstract including presentation of the Consciousness Model. However, the emphasis of this presentation will be points #1 and #2 above in order for people to experience the power Pure Consciousness/Love has to 1) heal the body and 2) add to the effectiveness of medicines, herbs and treatments.

Role and limitations of an Ayurvedic practitioner in Integrative approach for the management of Cancer in United States
It is estimated that by the end of year 2013, a staggering 1.5 million new cases of Cancer will be diagnosed in the US population. The prevalence of AM use among cancer patients in the United States has been estimated to be between 7% and 54%.
An increased number of population is resorting to CAM modalities for side-effects of the primary care, improve quality of life, prevent complications, counteract re-occurrence. In some instances if there is inconclusive findings for diagnosis, CAM is used as a primary modality. Ayurveda with its wide arena of modalities and holistic approach can provide useful outcomes at all levels of Cancer care. Since patients with cancer are not informed about the limitation of Ayurvedic practice in the US, expectations are much diverse.
This presentation is a record of cases that are diagnosed with cancer, where Ayurveda was used in various methods to support the client needs. Observation of these cases reveals a need for evidence based integrative approach in management of Cancer and a necessity to define the role and limitations of an Ayurvedic practitioner in cancer care in current times.

Classical Ayurvedic approach to Cancer Care – Case Presentations
There are elaborated descriptions in Ayurvedic classics on the cause, clinical features and management of tumors and cancer, with the names such as Apachi, Gulma, Granthi, and Arbuda. There are specific protocols mentioned on curative aspects of cancers that have resemblance with clinical entities of arbuda and granthi. Arbuda is considered as condition involving multiple doshas (often Tridoshaja), multiple dhatus and associated with multiple complications. Abuse of nature’s law upsets the human system and ends up in disease like cancer. It is again the nature, the foremost physician who brings the cure. Ayurveda is the first system to emphasize health as the perfect state of physical, psychological, social and spiritual component of a human being. The therapeutic approach of Ayurveda in the management of Cancer is multipronged with maintenance of health, cure of disease and rejuvenation or restoration of health. Sodhana chikitsa (purification process), which eliminates vitiated doshas, followed by a course of Rasayana therapy have been primarily used for medical management of cancer. In some cases Shamana chikitsa, which pacifies dosha and gradually relieves the disease, is adopted. However, Shamana treatment is prescribed only to weaker patients for whom sodana chikitsa is contraindicated. I would like to share some case studies in which we have successfully incorporated classical Ayurvedic protocols for the management of different types of Cancers. Ayurveda can be helpful in the management of cancer in many ways such as—preventive, palliative, curative and supportive. Ayurvedic protocols also help to improve the quality of life of the patients as an adjuvant or a co-therapy along with chemotherapy or radiotherapy or as post-surgery rehabilitation. Many of the rejuvenative and cell-protective activity of herbs and formulations prescribed in Rasayana therapy helps to improve the quality of life of individuals with Cancer.

Evaluation and scope of Sushrut’s Ligation with Compression Gradient technique on Keloid and alike conditions
Elephinstono says, 'Hindu Surgery is as remarkable as their medicine'. There were more than 127 different types of surgical instruments in common usage, some of them were sharp enough to divide hair. They include scalpels, lancets, bone-nippers, scoops, forceps etc. Ancient surgeons conducted amputations, practiced dichotomy, explored abdomen, cured hernia, fistula and piles, set fractures and dislocations, and F.B. (Foreign bodies) extraction. Cancer is used for group of diseases which may effect any part of the body. Synonyms to it are malignant tumors and neoplasm defined as rapid creation of abnormal growth of the cells beyond their usual boundaries and may invade adjoining parts of the body (metastasis). Metastasis are the major cause of the death.
Keloid may not be inducted into malignancy but the behaviour is reconned to line up the cancer like, since the management is frustrating due to recurrence and psychosocial reasons. Keloid formation occurs as a result of abnormal wound healing. Despite the high prevalence of Keloid in general population, they remain on the more challenging dermatologic conditions to manage. More than a cosmetic nuisance, they are often symptomatic and can have a significant psychosocial burden on the patient. Although multiple treatment modalities exist, no single treatment has proven widely effective. In fact, recurrence following treatment is generally the norm. Combination therapy is likely the optimal strategy. It is defined as a benign growth of dense fibrous tissue developing from an abnormal healing response to a cutaneous injury. Lee et al. evaluated 20 patients with Keloids and found that more than 80% of patients experienced Keloid associated with pruritus and pain. Many report a severe negative impact on quality of life (Arch Dermatal Res 2006, 297:433-8). For unknown reasons, Keloid occurs more frequently among blacks, Hispanics and Asians and less commonly Caucasians. (Facial plast surg 2001, 17:263-72; Aesthetic plast surg 2002, 26:184-8). Intense research is under way to better understand the pathophysiology of the abnormal processes leading to Keloid formation. For now, our greatest weapon lies in patient education, combination therapy, and prevention. The approach to this is counselling against body piercing and should avoid elective cosmetic procedures with a risk for scarring and the use of silicone gel sheet following surgical excision to reduce recurrence. The author intends to address Sushrut’s technique of Ligation added with compression gradient to evaluate its success rate. The presentation shall also share the other modalities and its scope in other like conditions.

Role of Ayurveda before, during and after chemotherapy
According to the WHO, cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 7.6 million deaths in 2008. There have been some breakthroughs in the management of cancer but despite all the advances in medical science, a cure is nowhere in sight.
Chemotherapy is an important part of current cancer management. However chemotherapy can cause acute, chronic or permanent side effects, ranging from pain, gastric issues, mouth sores, hair loss and others. They not only cause discomfort but can also cause serious illness and even death. Additionally, certain side effects may prevent doctors from delivering the prescribed dose of chemotherapy at the specific time and schedule of the treatment plan. Ayurvedic preventive and therapeutics principles can be successfully applied as adjunct therapy for better outcomes for chemotherapy as well as for reducing the undesired post chemo effects on the body. Protocols from this ancient holistic science can also be used to prepare the body physiologically and mentally before starting chemo.
Conclusion: This paper will talk about some of these strategies connecting them with classical Ayurvedic principles and/or with evidence from existing studies.

The psycho-spiritual basis of cancer pathogenesis and healing - Dr. Shiva Mohan
Shiva Mohan, M.D., M.P.H., ERYT began her path to healing in neuroscience, and this sparked her interest in the mind-body connection. In Medical School and during her Public Health Masters, she focused her studies on an extension of the mind-body relationship: the effects of community, development, and culture on health behavior. For Siva, consulting in international public health seemed to revolve around a central question: How do we encourage certain health behavior in different settings around the world? “I was most interested in the process of genuinely taking people’s lives into consideration when approaching health. I believe our lifestyles and habits determine our health, and this along with my cultural heritage drew me to ayurveda.” Several years later, Dr. Mohan is fortunate to practice Ayurveda and yoga, addressing health in a personal, individualized and holistic way. Her professional goals now center on writing, lecturing, and continuing to spread the awareness of Ayurveda and how it can complement modern medicine.
Topic: The psycho-spiritual basis of cancer pathogenesis and healing
Introduction: The role of psycho-spiritual patterns is often unacknowledged in cancer pathogenesis.
Methods: Providing counseling and tools to address carcinogenic psycho-spiritual patterns in concert with physiologic remedies (e.g. herbs, radiation, chemo, surgery)
Results: Patients with psycho-spiritual intervention are better able to cope with the cancer process, suffer less side effects from radiation and chemotherapy, heal faster from surgery and are more likely to stay in remission.
Discussion: More awareness on the psycho-spiritual basis of cancer pathogenesis may not only help cancer patients to heal, but also may be a powerful cancer prevention approach.
Conclusion: Psycho-spiritual healing approaches are an integral part of cancer care.

Potential Role of Ghee in Cancer Care - Sandeep Agarwal
Sandeep Agarwal, MBA is a computer technologist turned organic food entrepreneur and herbalist. While growing up in India, Sandeep’s mother would always take him to an Ayurvedic Practitioner for treatment if and when he would get sick. She would insist on serving fresh home-cooked meals and discouraged the family to eat food outside their home. He did not like this at that time, but he now appreciates this when he sees Americans paying the price of eating fast/junk food and following a materialistic lifestyle. He teaches the benefits of traditional foods and lifestyle using scientific concepts. He brought the concept of Ayurvedic ghritas to a culinary level by introducing six spiced ghee products that were featured in The New York Times.
Presentation Topic: "Potential Role of Ghee in Cancer Care"
Abstract: Ghee has been regarded very highly in all the ancient Ayurvedic texts. In this presentation, we will learn how a well prepared ghee can be an important part of cancer care. Ghee contains Vitamin D and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) which are very important for cancer care: a) Vitamin D promotes apoptosis b) Vitamin D slows down rapid multiplication of cancer cells. c) Vitamin D inhibits metastasis (spreading of cancer cells from original location to another location). d) Vitamin D works as an antioxidant and pro-oxidant to reduce cancer. e) CLA has purported benefits for cancer prevention, weight control, and high cholesterol in animal studies. After sunlight, ghee is the most concent rated source of Vitamin D. It is also a great source of CLA, especially for a vegetarian. Nothing comes even close to it. However, for ghee to have high levels of Vitamin D and CLA, cows must be grazing outside. Conventional dairy products from confined cows won't have high levels of Vitamin D and CLA. Vitamin D is added to dairy products to supplement it.

Healthy and Radiant Skin - Dr. Pratibha Shah
Ayurvedic solutions for a healthy and radiant skin
Skin as an organ has been described in intricate details in ancient Ayurvedic treatises. Skin covers and houses numerous tissues and channels including muscles, blood vessels, nerves and glands such as sweat glands and oil glands. Therefore care of skin is a complex matter and requires much more than external measures alone. Ayurveda offers excellent solutions for acquiring a healthy, beautiful and radiant skin. These remedies and tips are of course customized according to the skin type of the individual, which in turn is dictated, by the individual's body type. As with most other topics, these pearls of wisdom are found scattered throughout the Ayurvedic literature. This presentation is an attempt to string together the main underlying principles of skin care as found in the Ayurvedic treatises and present comprehensive strategies to care for one’s skin. The speaker will also elaborate on some simple and effective solutions for daily care of the skin as well as for common skin conditions such as acne, blemishes, dark circles and others.

The Role of Feminine Prana Shakti as Divine Mother: The Womb of Creation
Women are usually intuitively connected with their motherly, caring, loving, compassionate heart center. These are the integrative, self-balancing, dominant female qualities, in-born in the prana body of both males and females. Meaning, that either can be dominated by male or female qualities, but females can generally access their connection to Divine Mother, Prana Shakti more easily than males. The male consciousness operates aggressively through ego-mind. It creates mental, emotional conflicts and stress. It prevents us from connecting to the in-born, integrative, intuitive, healing power of the Cosmic Mother, Prana Shakti. It can be the “door” for health, well-being, and transformation for both sexes. Clearly, 85% of all illnesses such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, diabetes and obesity, represents just the surface symptoms. The cause of which remains hidden in the stress-producing, conflict –crating ego-mind. The entire body of the universe as well as our own body is animated by Shiva Consciousness and Cosmic Mother, Prana Shakti. This is the meaning of Ardhanarishvar Shiva that represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. This union is the experience of Samadhi. All human suffering is caused by abusive use of Prana Shakti. All health problems we face in our personal life and on our planet today, is caused by abusing the feminine power of Cosmic Mother, Prana Shakti. She is the womb of creation that provides our sustenance, survival, health and well-being. The purpose of the practice of both yoga and Ayurveda is to initiate healing through the union of Shiva and Shakti. It represents the self-balancing, harmonizing, unifying forces of body, mind, heart and soul. This is where healing comes from the very core of our Being.
Nano Yoga
In Pada I of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali it is stated that: The Word of Ishvara, is AUM (or OM). This is the Pranava. Through the sounding of the Word and through reflection upon its meaning, the Way is found. In Nano yoga we incorporate the sound of OM into the five movements based on the Five Tibetans. Modifications are taught for those unable to perform the exact positions.
Pada 1 further states: From this comes the realization of the Self (the soul) and the removal of all obstacles. To overcome the obstacles and their accompaniments, the intense application of the will to some one truth (or principle) is required. Also, it is said that: The peace of the chitta is also brought about by the regulation of the prana or life breath. During Nano Yoga we are taught to regulate the breath in realtion to the movements of the body and to stay focused on the breath by listening to and feeling the breath while we are in motion.
Going back to Pada 1 we learn that: The mind can be trained to steadiness through those forms of concentration which have relation to the sense perceptions. During the repetition phase of Nano Yoga we are trained to become aware of the extremeties (fingers and toes) and to use same as a method of counting as opposed to a mental counting of the repetitions. Through this practice we achieve a tri-binding life experience that cleanses the body, stills the minds and When this super-contemplative state is reached, the Yogi acquires pure spiritual realization through the balanced quiet of the chitta (also adapted from Pada 1).
Each participant will be instructed in the movements, the method of counting, the timing and duration of the breath as well as the incorporation of the sound of OM into the practice.

The treatment aims at restoration of functional balance including that of metabolism and hormones. The significance of panchakarma lies in the fact that menstrual disorders not only create issues with the uterine system but also lead to many physical and emotional complications, of which obesity is the most common one. The effectiveness of panchakarma procedures in treating women's disorders like polycystic ovarian syndrome, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, female infertility, and menopausal issues are well established through various clinical studies.

Abstract: Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. It is a global public health problem affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. In the U.S. alone, 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million are estimated to have low bone density, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Being a woman is one of the major risk factors of osteoporosis since studies show that 80% of those affected by osteoporosis are women. Conventional therapies for osteoporosis have been effective, but are expensive, and their extensive use has been associated with various side effects. There is a growing interest in complementary and alternative approaches that are safe and cost-effective. Ayurveda may be effective in addressing the above limitations of existing treatment options for osteoporosis. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe and evaluate Ayurvedic treatments that are considered important in restoring balance of Asthi Dhatu as per ayurveda.

Abstract: By calling on ayurveda’s ancient healing wisdom and practices, world renowned expert and spiritual teacher, Mother Maya, spreads a revolutionary idea: that once women reconnect with their female nature they can heal themselves, as well as their children and their community. Modern women are faced with unprecedented levels of stress, fatigue, and illness, as well as a profound disconnection from their inherent gift of love, creativity and femininity. In this extraordinary keynote, Mother illuminates forgotten wisdom of the ancient rishis; that women have absolute power within themselves to heal. By reconnecting to their innate shakti energy and aligning with lunar, solar and seasonal rhythms we recapture our feminine nature of love, creativity and nurturance. Women of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures can transform disease and despair into health and inner harmony. This power-packed keynote address enlivened by inspiring stories from Mother’s quarter-century long work demonstrates how women across cultural barriers have been utilizing ayurveda practices to renew their health, reconnect with their feminine nature, and ultimately, reclaim their innate power to heal- without medicine!

Abstract: Menopause is not a disease, but a normal part of life. According to ayurveda, a healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent major health problems and ease symptoms of the menopausal transition itself. Your overall health and balance when you reach menopause largely determines how smooth your transition will be. Health problems at menopause represent imbalances in the body that were already growing and are unmasked by the stress of shifting hormones. Menopause symptoms are Nature's wake-up call to let you know you need to start paying more attention to your health. Age 45 to 55 is a critical decade according to ayurveda. Ayurveda recommends preventive and curative management of symptoms of menopause, even though it is a Yapya condition. By following a proper diet, taking rasayana and certain poorva karmas and panchakarma considering the dosha, dhatu and mala, , menopause can be health-promoting, spiritually transforming and free of troublesome symptoms.

She is a member of various committees and is an evaluator, observer, and examination supervisor with BFUHS and other universities.
Abstract: She from whom one is born is mother, the same being about whom the prophet of Islam has said, “Heaven lies under the feet of the mother.” Woman is the root cause of progeny; she bears entire responsibility from conception to maturity of a fetus, birth, care and nutrition of the infant. If a woman is carefully attended, it keeps normal and healthy generation. The concept of progeny in ancient time was to achieve qualitative growth to society, not just a quantitative spurt in population. A critical review of Ayurvedic classics reveals that an individual’s physical and psychic constitution are both formed at the time of conception, i.e. constitution of an individual carried out from sperm and ovum, which is called moola prakriti of an individual. This is influenced by environment, diet, general activity, age, physical health, and mental condition of the mother. Thus, ayurveda places great emphasis on the care of the expectant mother in the subject garbhini paricharyaa (prenatal care).

She has delivered about 3000 babies and performed the same number of major and minor gynecological surgeries. She offers results-oriented specialized ayurvedic treatment for gynecological problems like PCOS, infertility, Fallopian tubal blocks, etc. Dr. Deshpande underwent laparoscopy training at FPAI Hospital, Mumbai; sonography and fetal monitoring training at Wadia Hospital, Mumbai; IUI training at AAKAR IVF Center, Mumbai. She worked for three years during post graduation as a resident and registrar at Tarachand Ramanath Hospital Pune. Abstract: Fallopian tubal blocks play a major role in the causes of primary and secondary infertility. Causes of such blockages are mainly infection, tubercular salpingitis, previous surgeries like dilatation and curettage, salpingotomy for ectopic pregnancy, etc. The treatment for infertility due to tubal factors is mainly IVF, i.e. in vitro fertilization, which is very expensive with success rates of up to 40% at very sophisticated centers. IVF requires a gynecologist, a sonologist, an embryologist and also huge instrumentation. In developing countries, this treatment is beyond the reach of a common man. Ayurveda gives some hope for such patients with the treatment of uttarbasti. After treatment with uttarbasti, we get very encouraging results not only to resolve tubal blockages, but also in improving the quality of the endometrium and the tubal mucosa, all resulting in a very good pregnancy rate. The paper presents clinical data of the cases that were administered uttarbasti and speaks about the efficacy of the procedure, evaluating the clinical data. It shows photographs of hysterosalpingography tests done before and after uttarbasti procedure. It also tells the various medicines used for the procedure. Uttarbasti treatment gives very encouraging results in the treatment of infertility due to fallopian tubal blocks. It is highly recommended to undergo this relatively simple and cost effective treatment before resorting to in vitro fertilization.

I am writing this to acknowledge my appreciation to you on providing a practical, valuable, authentic ayurvedic knowledge to me during a couple of recently conducted webinars , I attended. These two hour sessions were very helpful in enhancing my practice as an Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor and I will ensure that the knowledge I acquired will benefit the Rogis who consult with me.
You are an amazing teacher, practitioner and utmost a wonderful person. - Thank you for your teachings and I would like to continue to be associated with you as long as I am in Ayurvedic practice. Regards - Om Sanduja, BVSC, CHC, AWC, Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor, Maryland, US.
