Topic: Acne vulgaris & it’s formulations in Ayurveda
Abstract: Acne vulgaris is an extremely common skin disorder that affects all individuals at least once
during life. The incidence of acne peaks at teenage, but substantial numbers of men and women between 20-40 years of age were also affected by disorder. Acne vulgaris is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles are blocked with dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil (sebum). The blocked follicles cause blemishes on the skin, including pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts. Acne vulgaris also known as common acne, one of its main causes is hormones, especially around puberty. Most acne occurs on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. Symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe. If not treated promptly, both moderate and severe acne can result in scarring. Acne vulgaris is caused by a combination of hormones, oil, and bacteria. During puberty, a hormone called androgen increases and the sebaceous glands produce more of the oily substance sebum. Typically, sebum and dead skin cells come up through the hair follicles and out through the pores in the skin. When sebum, skins cells, and bacteria clog the follicles, the sebum can’t escape through the pores, which causes acne. Physician may suggest one treatment or a combination, depending on the severity of acne. Mild acne may be able to be treated with over the counter topical medicine in creams, gels, and washes with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. In Ayurveda herbal cosmetics are now getting more important as its side effects are comparatively less than that of synthetic one. Different plant parts such as leaves, stem, bark, wood, rhizomes are used in cosmetics. Azadiracta indica (Neem) containing creams possess a wide range of pharmacological properties especially as Antibacterial, Anti inflammatory.

Topic: Onychomycosis (Nail Fungal Infection)
Abstract: The Ayurvedic study of skin diseases is unique in that it allows the practitioner to assess and address the conditions precisely, as they are easily observable and the medicine can be applied directly. The skin, being our outermost layer of protection form the environment, is a clear reflection of the state of Ojas. The skin can be the place where an aggravated dosha relocates and manifests, or the tissue where opportunistic microorganisms decide to live. In the case of onychomycosis, even though dermatophytes are responsible for the infection, Ayurveda is more concerned with the root cause of the condition: the health of the digestion and the immune system (a function of Ojas). While Western medicine focuses on killing the pathogen, Ayurveda’s approach assures that the body itself is able to fight the infection and prevent it form reoccurring. This presentation explores the Ayurvedic treatment of nail fungal infections including the use of diet, herbs and general lifestyle to support immune function.

Topic: Acne Vulgaris (Yavana Pidika) & Ayurvedic Management
Abstract: Yuvana pidika is a common disorder affecting a particular age group. It is a disease of the adolescent. It affects both the Sex invariably. It is not limited to any particular class of the society. It correlates to Acne vulgaris. Acne is considered as the prevalent dermatological disorder. It manifests mainly on the face. But when it becomes chronic & severe it leads to severe scarring of the face. Yuvana pidika is explained as kshudra roga by acharya Sushruta. It is characterized by shalmali kantaka sadrusha pidakas on face. Though, Shamana and shodhana chikitsa are mentioned for it by various acharyas but acharya Vagbhata states lepa as the prathama chikitsa. Manjishta lepa is explained by yoga ratnakara as an effective chikitsa.2Mahamanjistadi Kashaya is a proven formulation for twak vikaras. It has ingredients which act on twacha vikaras. Hence both the formulations are worth tested for their efficacy in the management of yuvana pidika. They are safe and economical and suitable for the fast life where people have no time for shodhana chikitsa. Present work was undertaken to study the effect of manjishta lepa and mahamajishtadi kashaya, i.e, shamana therapy in the management of yuvana pidika with special reference to Acne vulgaris.

Topic: Urticaria (Sheetha Pitta) & Ayurvedic Management
Abstract: Urticaria commonly presents with intensely pruritic wheals, sometimes with edema of the subcutaneous or interstitial tissue. It has a lifetime prevalence of about 20%. Although often self-limited and benign, it can cause significant discomfort, continue for months to years, and uncommonly represent a serious systemic disease or life-threatening allergic reaction. Clinical presentation involves red, swelling, and itchy plaques. Based on the symptomatic representation it can be correlated as Sheetha pitta in Ayurveda. Sheetha pitta is one among skin diseases caused by all doshas involvement. Sotha (inflammation) and Kandu (itching) caused by Kapha, Shula (Pain) caused by Vata and Daha (Burning sensation) caused by Pitta. Ayurveda medicines along with panchakarma treatment, internal medications and follow the do's and don'ts were followed in the patients suffering from urticaria. The signs & symptoms of urticaria were reduced during the course of treatment in patients. Hence, It suggest that purification procedures followed by internal medicines along with diet plan and life style changes are essential for the complete recovery and to prevent the recurrences in urticaria patients.

Topic: Management of Plaque Psoriasis (Sidhma Kushta) through Ayurvedic Intervention
Abstract: Psoriasis is a common dermatologic disease, the most common type of which is plaque psoriasis. This skin condition is characterized by erythematous sharply demarcated lesions with stable growing plaque. The aetiology of this skin condition is not yet clearly understood. Management of psoriasis in modern medicine include topical application of glucocorticoids, ultraviolet light therapy and drugs like methotrexate which does not give a permanent solution and moreover causes side effects on long term use. This skin condition is an area where Ayurveda can give effective solution and has potential opportunity. In Ayurveda, psoriasis may be correlated to Sidhma Kushta. This presentation aims towards understanding and assessing the symptoms of plaque psoriasis, implementing the Ayurvedic treatment principles, planning a treatment protocol, and assessing the disease by PASI score, through a case report. This case is a proof of effectivity of Ayurvedic treatment in managing conditions like psoriasis.

Topic: Acne Vulgaris and Ayurvedic Beauty Therapies
Abstract: Acne is a common skin disease. It occurs when pores of the skin are clogged with oil, dead skin and bacteria if untreated. It is a sign that something is imbalanced in your body which reflects on the skin. Ayurveda believes that the Tidoshas (three pillars vata, pitta and kapha) in the form of tissues (dhatu) control all the activities in the body. Aggravation of dosha is the main reason of the eruption of the acne. Acne vulgaris more found in adolescence when there is an access secretion from oil glands. According to Ayurveda distortion in the vata dosha and phlegm (kapha) causes further distortion of the blood or rakta dhatu. Vata when gets vitiated due to the unhealthy diet and lifestyles, affects other two doshas Kapha and Pitta to aggravate them. Aggravated pitta affacts rakta dhatu or blood. The vitiated blood affects the skin and causes excess secretion of oil from sebaceous gland. Acne due to pitta vitiation are generally red, soft, small and tend to be aggravated in hot weather. Aggravated Kapha imparts the stickiness to the oil produced by sebaceous gland of the skin. Thus the thick sebaceous plugs are formed in the skin pores and hair follicles leading to eruption of acne teenagers are more prone to develop acne.

Topic: The Tantrayukti (unwritten wisdom) of Kustha-roga (Skin Diseases)
Abstract: Kustha roga are often stubborn and recur. Because the skin represents all tissue layers and reflect the health of a cross-section of the 7 dhatus, it is important to begin healing skin diseases by assessing the mind, the gut and the skin and treating all simultaneously. Assessment of old injuries that may have altered the tissue metabolism, or current issues in the diet or lifestyle impact the healing of skin diseases. Recurring diseases reflect the gut and sometimes very old wounds or imbalances that require deep cleaning through pancakarma or treatments unconventional to mainstream medicine. What is not written explicitly in the text (tantrayukti) is the deep role of incompatible combinations of ahara-vihara-aushadham (diet-lifestyle-medicines) in aggravating all doshas to create skin illnesses.

Topic: Herbal Remedies for Psoriasis
Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious disorder which affects the skin and joints, characterized by flaking, redness and inflammation of the skin. Once thought to be a skin disorder, psoriasis is now understood to be a condition originating in the immune system. The, scaly patches caused by psoriasis called, psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes on a silvery-white appearance. Plaques frequently occur on the skin of the elbows and knees but can affect any area including the scalp and genitals. In contrast to eczema, psoriasis is more likely to be found on the extensor aspect of the joint. Having worked with numerous clients for over twenty years, in my experience I have understood that Diet and lifestyle changes play the most important role in the management of Psoriasis. As a Nutritional Consultant and Yoga Practitioner, I recommend proper nutrition and stress management through Therapies like Shirodhara, Pranayama and Meditation Techniques.

Topic: Stretch Marks during pregnancy (Kikkisa) & Ayurveda
Abstract: Strech marks or striae gravidarum has been reported as a cosmetic problem for 90% of pregnant women since ages. While not medically dangerous, SG can be disfiguring, causing emotional and psychological distress in pregnant women. Stretch marks are slightly depressed linear marks with varying length & breadth found in pregnancy. This represents the scar tissue in the deeper layer of the cutis. Initially they are pinkish but after the delivery, they turn into striae albicans. Probable causes are mechanical stretching of the skin as well as increased level of aldosterone. SG can cause itching, burning, and discomfort on the breasts, abdomen, hips, and thighs. As far as ayurvedic texts are considered Kikkis is described as cutenous change during pregnancy and topical application of various herbal drugs like Nimba taila, Karavira taila etc. are found very useful in the management of kikkis (stretch marks during pregnancy). Also during pregnancy harmful synthetic oral as well as topical drugs are not advised due to probable adverse effects to pregnant women as well as fetus. Instead Ayurveda can be a beneficial choice of treatment due to its minimal side effects and effective proven herbal management of stretch marks during pregnancy.

Topic: Skin manifestations in Hypothyroidism - Ayurvedic Management
Abstract: Skin is the largest sense organ of our body and is the main index of the internal environment of our body. Thyroid abnormality is one such pathology which produces skin manifestations along with other symptoms. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism produce different dermatological manifestations which sometimes may pose a challenge to the dermatologists. Dry skin, hyperkeratosis, hair loss are a few dermatological symptoms of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism cannot be directly correlated to any disease in Ayurveda. Depending on the symptomatology it can be understood as kapha avruta udana vata. Adoptation of kapha vata balancing chikitsa, avarana chikitsa and rasayana chikitsa helps to check the main pathology. This in turn also pacifies the associated symptoms. Yet dermatological manifestations need a special focus and intense management due to their cosmetologically importance. Ayurveda blesses the mankind with several drugs and procedures which help to tackle the cutaneous manifestations in a more simple and natural way. All the medicines and treatment procedures will be discussed in the presentation.

Topic: Role of Visha Kalpa in Skin Disorders
Abstract: Shwetra (Vitiligo) is a skin disease which takes longer time to cure. It affects the external beauty of the body causing social stigma, shyness, loss of confidence, fear of comments marital problems, etc. The disease needs repeated shodhana and regular internal and external shaman chikitsa for longer duration. Objectives: To study the efficacy of Vishakalpa (Shwetra lepa) alone in the management of Shwetra and to provide a potent drug for sure and quick relief from Shwetra (vitiligo), this pilot study was carried out. Material and methods: Shwetra lepa was prepared and used as local application in 15 patients having newly diagnosed patches of vitiligo. The changes in shape, size and number of patches and VETI score was assessed before and after treatment. The data was analyzed with the help of parametric and non parametric tests. Results: Though there was no significant change in VETI score, minimal reduction in shape and size of patches, daha and kandu was observed with Shwetra lepa vati. Conclusion: One month study duration for local application of Shwetra lepa vati and sample size was found to be insufficient to prove the efficacy of Shwetra lepa. Hence it is recommended that Shwetra lepa should be used alone for longer period up to 6 to 9 months or it can be used along with repeated shodhana and continuous shamana chikitsa for 2 to 6 months for effective results.

Topic: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
Abstract: Herpes Simplex I (cold sores) caused by the HP virus leads to oral herpes lesions (could be ocular) and stays latent in nerve cells as a lifelong infection in humans. This makes management complex even though it is one of the most common (and highly contagious) human pathogens effecting 50-90 percent of the population. HSV-1 is the leading cause of infectious blindness in the US.

Topic: Switra (Vitiligo) - Ayurvedic concept and management
Abstract: Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin loses its normal color or it can be fold as pigment cells (melanocytes). This condition starts from a spot like condition which may get bigger areas with time in any part of body. Usually, melanin is a specific pigment which is reduced from the skin due to metabolic defect in liver. It may be more noticeable in people with darker skin, it is not contagious but creates social stigma. In Ayurveda it is called Shvitra or Kilasa which is also termed as Shveta Kustha in the group of Kustha or skin diseases. It is caused by the imbalance of all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) vitiating Rakta, Mamsa and Medhas Dhatus. Several medicines both internal and external are described in Ayurveda . In clinical practice Pratisarana & Lekhana kriya followed by external application of cream & lotion were found effective. If the disease is not treated earlier it may spread & remain forever because it is told as Asadhya.

Topic: Vitiligo- An Ayurvedic perspective with special reference to Svitra
Abstract: Ayurveda considers the skin as a mirror of ones pathology. Acharya Sushruta describes the seven layers of the skin in which origin of different skin disorders are explained. According to Ayurveda, Bhrajaka Pitta is responsible for the normal color of the skin. This correlates to the Melanocytes situated in the skin. This cells produces Melanin pigment through a complicated process called Melanogenesis that is catalyzed by tyrosine and other related proteins. The production of Melanin is hampered, loss of color is observed over the skin. This particular condition is considered as Vitiligo, which can be correlated with Svitra originated in Vedini, 5th layer of skin. My present topic is exploring and addressing the different treatment therapies done practically by various authors, clinicians and traditional vaidyas all over the country. Detail description will be done during presentation.

Maryna Stasiuk, Washington, USA - I was inspired to study Ayurveda by my family while looking for a holistic way to care about the nearest people. My first step was in homeopathy, then energy healing (Reiki), later on, I was introduced to Vedas and Ayurveda as a part of them. I was completely smitten by the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and blessed to study it from the root texts, brilliant vaidyas and with a support of my family. It is where my Ayurvedic Journey started. I'm very passionate about following Ayurveda in my daily routines and professional practice. My aspiration is to bring ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to worldwide, help people to be established in their health, teach, guide, and support them on their journey. I believe that the scholarship of Traditional Ayurveda and Yoga can amazingly transform our personal lives and make positive shifts from the stage of the disease to health. I saw this transformation many times, first in myself and my family members then in my Rogis (health seekers). I'm mainly working with chronic conditions, doing my best to help people restoring health using all available Ayurvedic tools.
Topic: The causes, symptoms, and management of Visarpa triggered by Amlapitta
Abstract: According to Caraka, ‘Visarpa is a serious disorder afflicting like cobra venom spreading various parts of the body very quickly’. It could be correlated to herpes simples virus (HSV), Herpes zoster (Shingles), Erysipelas. They caused by different viruses/bacterias and could vary in Lakṣaṇas (symptoms) but have similarities in their hetu (causative factors) and Saṃprāpti (Pathogenesis). Visarpa is affecting Rakta (blood), Lasika (plasma), Tvak (skin), Maṃsa (muscle tissue). One of the causative factors of Visarpa mentioned by Charaka is the suppression of vomiting generated in the condition of Urdhvaga Amlapitta that reached the stage of vitiating the blood. This situation could be correlated to GERD or acid reflux. Due to prolonged digestion and aggravation of Pitta dosha, the sour element in the food increased during the digestive process. In the chronic conditions or high severity of the disease, the sour element could enter the blood and spread all over the body giving rise to Visarpa. The following cases will show the resemblence and chikitsa of Visarpa that was correlated to two different diagnoses (Shingles and HSV) and got rise after the chronic or severe Amlapitta.

Topic: Scope and Application of Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda for the Management of Skin Disorders
Abstract: Our body is covered with a protective sheath called Skin. This not only protects us by atmospheric pollutants and many stressors but also reflects the state of metabolic function. If we go through the ancient ayurvedic literature we find that at many places the treatment module and drugs mentioned for the most internal organ/system- Nervous system has also been prescribed for the most external anatomical structure -Skin. As per the embryonic development of skin and Nervous system both are ectodermal in origin and this very fact was well known to our ancient Acharyas. Regarding the treatment modalities one should follow the fundamental principles of Ayurveda-Ahara (Diet),Nidra(Sleep) and Brahmacharya( Code of good conduct). The matter in detailed shall be discussed and be presented.

Topic: Role of Ayurveda In Treating Hyperpigmentation
Abstract: Body’s largest organ “Skin”, covers the entire body and serves as a protective shield against heat, light, injury, infection and regulates body temperature. Skin has 7 layers as per ayurveda. Each layer extends itself to the deeper levels of the body and that is the reason most skin diseases are rooted deeply into various dhatus or tissues. The most common and major skin diseases that are seen are acne vulgaris, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis, eczema and urticaria. Skin diseases happen when the 3 doshas are out of balance. Ayurveda has an effective concept of understanding skin disorders. These skin diseases/disorders can be treated naturally with panchakarma therapy, ayurvedic herbal remedies, dietary changes, topical remedies and even stress management techniques. Ayurvedic treatment for Hyperpigmentation goes to the roots of the problem and treats it according to their cause. In Ayurveda, enhances complexion, blood purification are few terms specifying skin lightening. The unique, effective, and long lasting concept of skin lightening in Ayurveda has led to the emergence of Ayur cosmeceuticals. The herbs which alleviate pitta, rakta in general either acting through their rasa, vipāka or prabhāva are considered as varṇya. It may take a few weeks to show up signs of improvement, but you can be sure about its permanent solutions.

Topic: An ayurvedic approach to Estrogen deficient Skin problems in Menopausal Women
Abstract: Menopause is a critical period in a woman’s life characterized by declining ovarian function and decreased serum estrogen levels. Estrogen deprivation in postmenopausal conditions accelerates many skin changes, including dryness, atrophy, fine wrinkling, and poor wound healing. Studies show that at tissue level the skin ageing due to endogenous factors and hormonal changes shows excessive dryness, Malpighian layer thinning, microcirculation disorders, collagenic or elastin fiber degradation and simultaneous glycation, decreased speed of sebum and perspiration secretion. Characteristically menopause in Ayurveda is signified by degeneration and decay associated with increased Vata. These changes are called Nishpratikriya- changes that can not be resisted. Ayurveda is holistic and individualistic in its approach. Rasayana (rejuvenating) and Vayah-Sthapaneeya (age- stabilizing) herbs and multimodal approach of Ayurveda brings a ray of hope.

Topic: Ayurvedic Management of Eczema (Vicharchika): A case study
Abstract: In the Ayurvedic text, all skin diseases are included under the Kushtarog and are classified into Mahakushta and Kshudrakushta. Vicharchika is described under Kshudrakushta. The clinical presentation of Vicharchika is similar to Eczema in modern dermatology. Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is characterized by dry, itchy skin with areas of poorly demarcated erythema and scale. In the acute phase, Eczema may be vesicular and oozing; in the chronic phase, it may become hyperpigmented and thickened. Virruddha Ahar causes Agnimandya. Agnimandya leads to incomplete digestion and fermentation and produces Ama leading Tridoshdushti and Kled formation, leads to Mansa dusti, Twakdusti, and Raktadusti and causes Vicharchika. This presentation aims to understand and assess the symptoms of Eczema, implementing the Ayurvedic treatment principles, planning a treatment protocol, and assessing the disease by Ayurveda through a case report.
