Evidence based cancer therapy: A review of Ayurvedic literature
Cancer is one of the most challenging conditions affecting modern society. Anti-cancer therapies have long existed in traditional medical practice, evidenced by ancient textbooks in Ayurveda describing various herbs and therapies for cancer management. A re-examination of the Ayurvedic approach is likely to become more prevalent in the coming years due to growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine. Therefore, the objective of this presentation is to describe the available literature addressing research on anti-cancerous Ayurvedic herbs and Ayurvedic treatment strategies for different cancers. A literature search was conducted to identify studies using six databases for relevant articles published through January 2013. Evidence from the literature indicates that Ayurvedic medicines are an effective approach for both the preventative and management aspects of cancer treatment.
