Epigenetics is the science of changes in gene expression that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence, resulting in a change in the phenotype without a change in the genotype. These changes can be passed on to subsequent generations. The factors that cause epigenetic changes have a profound effect on the physiology, tissue function, organ function, and mind/body function. Epigenetics is the basis of all phenotypic changes, including prenatal, postnatal, childhood development, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. The phenotypic expression is dynamic and keeps changing depending on the type of influence. Hence, epigenetic changes are highly personalized and differ between individuals, depending on which part of the DNA is affected and whether the effect is positive or negative. Epigenetic changes are brought about by diet and digestion, lifestyle and behavior, seasonal factors, sensory input, emotions, stress, exposure to toxins including pollution, and other environmental factors. If we indulge in healthy input through the five senses, mind and body, we maintain our health and well-being. If we indulge in unhealthy input we fall prey to disorders and disease, an
imbalanced state known as vikruti in Ayurveda. Corrective measures are then required to bring us back to our true nature, which is a healthy and balanced state. This conference will focus on the factors that bring about epigenetic changes and the tools available through Ayurveda to restore and maintain balance and health.

Topic: Ahara and Vihara during Pregnancy and its epigenetic influence on child's health
Abstract: Ayurveda advocates specially designed diet and lifestyle during pregnancy known as Garbhini Paricharya. We now know that there is very close connection between diet and lifestyle of the pregnant woman and health of child as well as occurrence of diseases in later life which we know as Epigenetics. Understanding Grabhini Paricharya in the light of epigentics and developing it further can be the solution towards reducing the occurrence of metabolic disorders like Childhood obesity, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes.

Topic: Maternal epigenetics & fetal life programming of adult onset of diseases
Abstract: According to the Barker hypothesis, the period of pregnancy and the intrauterine environment are crucial and can influence the growth and development of the fetus as well as the child suture postnatal health to develop diseases like hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, metabolic disorders, pulmonary, renal and mental illnesses. The maternal lifestyle, particularly diet, exercise, smoking & exposure to infections during pregnancy, have an important role in determining the risk to develop diseases that manifest themselves both during childhood and particularly in adulthood. Several epidemiological studies have revealed that exposure to an unfavorable environment in early life is associated with a significantly increased risk of later disease, a phenomenon termed ‘early life programming’. Factors that adversely affect the gestational and early postnatal environment such as maternal diseases and their treatments, life-style such as nutrition and activity as well as exposure to pollutants can alter fetal development with persistent effects on health. Several risk factors including overweight, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure track from childhood to adult life, and are linked to adult diseases. Health promotion through Ayurveda during ante natal will help to create optimal intrauterine environment or proper growth & development of the fetus to reduce the risk o adult onset of diseases. Prevention must begin early in the life i.e., maternal and childhood stage in the form of a public health campaign directed towards lifestyle changes of the family / society as a whole.

Topic: Epigenetics - a Source of Biochemical Individuality influencing Brain & Behavioral Health
Abstract: While Diet, lifestyle, Environmental stressors and stressful life events create biochemical imbalances, the root cause often goes back to genetics and epigenetics (influence of environmental factors in a person’s life that turn genes ‘on’ and ‘off’ without changing the DNA sequence). Nutrient imbalances (both deficiencies and excess) can alter brain levels of key neurotransmitters and in turn lead to brain and behavioral health issues. Biochemical factors influence our personalities, behaviors, mental health and immune functions and overall health. We are all Biochemically unique. Understand the correlation of Doshas and Biochemical individualities / Biotypes influenced by Epigenetics. Reviewed along with case presentations.

Topic: Dynamic DNA, Epigenetics & Ayurveda
Abstract: The inherited genes from parents form the genetic code. The genes which express are less than 2% and form the genotype, which equates with Janma Prakriti. The expression of the genotype forms the phenotype, which equates with Deha Prakriti (psychophysiological constitution). Epigenetics is the science of changes in gene expression that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence, resulting in a change in the phenotype without a change in the genotype. Deha Prakriti is affected by lifestyle and behavior, diet and digestion, stress management, and environmental factors. All these factors affect the expression of genes through epigenetic mechanisms that turn genes on or off, thereby affecting health. Ayurveda deals with the factors that cause epigenetic changes that affect the phenotype (Deha Prakriti) by modifying the expression of DNA. Therefore, epigenetics is a key component of Ayurveda. Scientific investigations validating this will be discussed. Dr. Hari Sharma's latest book can be purchased at: https://www.amazon.com/Dynamic-DNA-Activating-Energy-Better/dp/1590794478

Topic: Ayurveda & Epigenetics
Abstract: Epigenetics is the process by which the expression of inherited traits is modified by external influences, our choices and lifestyle or other mechanisms without any change to the DNA sequence. Epigenetics describes the effect of all factors (internal and external) that affect gene expression. The expression of the inherited traits (phenotypic expression-Vikruti) is dynamic and keeps changing depending on the type of influence. Epigenetic changes are highly individualistic and depend on which part of the DNA is affected. Ayurveda terms epigenetics as Vikruti- a state of imbalance that requires suitable corrections to restore the true self. In this presentation, I will discuss about Stress and epigenetic changes. Stress of any kind, results in an epigenetic change primarily that affects protein expression which adversely affects physiological function and behavior through adulthood. The magnitude, duration and pathological consequences differ markedly between individuals based on the kind of stress, genetic background, and lifestyle. Research studies show that stress-induced epigenetic modifications will influence behavior, physiological outcomes and disease risk. Please read the article online: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6148064/

Topic: S.E.E.D.S of Epigenetic dynamics – Ayurveda framework
Abstract: Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression (active versus inactive genes) that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence — a change in phenotype without a change in genotype — which in turn affects how cells read the genes. The literal meaning of the term epigenetic is “on top of or in addition to genetics.” Accumulating evidences proves that there are many factors which modulate the system or process of epigenetics; which are grouped together and named as SEEDS by Dr Sathya N Dornala. The acronym includes Sleep (Nidra), Exercise (Vyayama), Environment, Education (spiritual), Diet (Ahara) and Stress (Vichara) & Social connectivity. Of which three factors Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya are collectively known as “Trayopastambha” (Three life supporters). Pattern of epigenetics is like double edged sword. These factors may cause harmful epigenetical changes when SEEDS are not properly maintained and conversely gives highly beneficial effects when SEEDS are duly followed.

Topic: Chrono Biology & Ayurveda
Abstract: In 2017 Nobel prize was awarded to three physiologists who first discovered that cells inside organisms change their function based on the time of day. These physiologists spent decades studying how the circadian rhythm operates inside plants, animals and people. We now know that when we see daylight, the hypothalamus in the brain tends messages to the cells and systems in the body to alter the way they function. The clock genes inside our cells change the protein pathways of that cell. That’s why your liver, your digestive track, your brain, your circulatory system are doing different things at night than they do during the day. Latest research summarizes many of the discoveries that chronobiologists like these have made in recent years and it asks the provocative question, “Is your schedule killing you?” The answer is Yes and How can we adopt the ancient Ayurvedic practices to prevent and reverse this lifestyle epidemic. Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar's latest book can be purchased at: https://www.amazon.com/Change-Your-Schedule-LIfe-Optimize/dp/0062684868/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=suhas+kshirsagar&qid=1579214469&sr=8-1

Topic: Seasonal Diet, Sleep, Gut Microbiome, and Epigenetics
Abstract: Diet can impact epigenetic changes linked with disease and may modify gene expression patterns through epigenetic mechanisms Gut microbiota can affect the epigenetic processes of the host, consequently causing diseases such as allergy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease autoimmune disease, metabolic syndrome, colorectal cancer, stress-related disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders This possibly results from dysbiosis, a negative alteration of the gut microbiota, as well as changes in microbial metabolites, which are triggered by environmental factors such as diet, age, stress, and pharmacological factors . All these factors affect the expression of genes through epigenetic mechanisms that turn genes on or off, thereby affecting health. In Ayurveda, diet and sleep is an important key to health. Today we can say that diet and sleep alters our microbiome, and a seasonal, varied diet and quality sleep promotes the very significant diversity and balance of our intestinal flora.

Topic: RUTUCHARYA -The Seasonal Regimen for Good Health
Abstract: Rutu the season, classified by different features expresses various effects on the body as well as the environment. The concept of Rutucharya has been explained widely in all the Brihat Trayees of Ayurveda (Charaka, Sushrutha & Vagbhata Samhitas). Topic: Your Blueprint for Life with Ayurveda
Abstract: Ayurveda means the science of life and is the most ancient health care system in the world that is a complete system for managing all aspects of health as well as spirituality, including methods for increasing longevity, healing disease, cleansing the body, maintaining a healthy weight and spiritual development. So, what are we to make of it today? Don’t be fooled into thinking there’s no scientific basis for Ayurveda. On the contrary, what the ancient sages knew has been slowly proven through the ages. For decades, scientists have known the basic structure of our DNA. Although nearly every cell in the body has the same set of genes, why is it that different types of cells look and behave so differently. The answer is epigenetics, a rapidly growing science that focuses on gene specialization. But did you know that what you eat, where you live, who you interact with, when you sleep, how you exercise, even aging can change which genes can be turned on and off. Ayurveda has always known this. So, if we can reverse a genes state by diet and lifestyle, then we could theoretically cure cancer, slow aging, stop obesity and so much more. Curious to know how different foods and lifestyles can epigenetically influence health? Then let’s look at Ayurveda as science continues to catch up to this complete and life-transforming system of health maintenance, disease prevention, and cure.

Topic: Medical Astrology As a Diagnostic Tool in Ayurveda
Abstract: Medical astrology as a Diagnostic tool in Ayurveda
Medical astrology has a significant role in all branches of Medicine and the Birth Chart of a person gives a clear picture of the influence of planetary bodies on the physical and astral body of a person, manifesting the physical and mental health. Planets have a control over Dosha or Guna of a person and the celestial bodies have vital involvement in the various aspects of a disease like -
a) The type of a disease can be indicated by the involvement of a planet
b) The site of a disease can be indicated by the particular zodiac sign
c) Period of suffering can be indicated by Timeline (Dashas) of a planet
Medical Astrology is useful in assessing the timing, prevention, diagnosis, severity and treatment of a disease and uses four elements i.e. Fire, Earth, Air and Water for understanding the nature of a person. The Astrological Natal chart (Kundali) becomes a blue print that enables treating Doctors to have a better understanding of the physiology in order to design a Holistic approach to achieve optimum Mental and Physical Health.
The Topic would cover as to how the two sciences of life (Medicine) and light (Astrology) blend together and can be used in harmony to provide a greater understanding and deeper application of both. The Science of Astrology works as a tool for mankind to minimize suffering and live in greater harmony with nature. An Ayurvedic Medical practitioner can diagnose undiagnosable diseases, decide the type of treatment from the horoscope of a patient, determine the best time to start treatment to heal quickly and recommend a particular lifestyle on the basis of horoscope to prevent occurrence of disease.

Topic: The Genie in Your Genes
Abstract: Dr. Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing. Citing hundreds of scientific studies, he shows how beliefs and emotions can trigger the expression of DNA strands. He focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs. These genes turn on within a few seconds of a stimulus. They can be triggered by thoughts or emotions ("I loved that unexpected gift of roses Bill gave me" or "I'm so mad about what Uncle John said at the Christmas party"). Many IEGs are regulatory genes turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system, such as the production of white blood cells that destroy attacking bacteria and viruses. Epigenetics thus influences our health every day. He coins the new term "Epigenetic Medicine" to describe healing techniques with epigenetic effects. He summarizes the science behind the infant fields of Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, both of which offer promising epigenetic medical therapies, and describes a few of the thousands of powerful personal breakthroughs that are being achieved by therapists, doctors and lay people practicing these techniques. The Genie in Your Genes shows that there is a sound theoretical framework, based on credible experiments, for understanding these astonishing results, and predicts that the insights of Epigenetic Medicine will dramatically advance the fields of both medicine and psychology in the coming decade.

Topic: Epigenetics and Ayurvedic Diet & Ayurvedic Therapies for Optimal health and reducing stress
Abstract: Epigenetics looks at the effect of various biological and environmental signals that could affect gene expression. A person’s choice of foods, chronic stress and lifestyle could be a source of epigenetic signals that could modify gene expression in adults and increase the risk for chronic disease states such as Diabetes and Obesity. Stress can also affect a person’s immunity. Stress has been implicated for its role in increased cortisol levels. Some recent studies are showing that that stress can cause new DNA modifications in the brain and increase the rick for neurological problems. The prevalence is on the rise for Chronic Disease states such as Diabetes and Obesity. Understanding the relationship between Epigenetics, diet, lifestyle and chronic stress could help in the identification of key factors to prevent or lower the risk for diseases such as obesity, and diabetes. Also Lot of the recent studies have suggested that consuming certain foods, herbs and spices may be able to modify our genes expression and influencing our health. Ayurvedic nutrition concepts hold the key to a personalized approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic approach through the use of Ayurvedic Therapies could be used as a tool for stress management. The presentation will focus on Ayurvedic diet, Ayurvedic Nutrition concepts, Foods and various spices on achieving optimal health. Through this presentation we will learn about importance of different Ayurvedic Therapies such as Shirodhara and Abhyanga and its use as a stress management tool. This presentation will also focus on Case studies, latest research and practical approach of using Ayurvedic Therapies in stress management.

Topic: Epigenetics & Ayurvedic Approach of Healing
Abstract: Ayurveda is a natural holistic medical system with a highly personalized approach. It identifies each individual as a unique entity with a specific constitution and tendencies. The process of disease management in Ayurveda is understanding the unique nature of the individual and the imbalances within his/her body-mind systems and creating a protocol that includes diet, lifestyle, herbs, formulations, mindful practices, and awareness sessions. While all the diseases are affecting the individual’s mind-body systems the entire mechanism of healing is also happening in the same mind-body systems of the same individual including the digestive system, metabolic system, immune system, hormones and so on. Healing is a process of downregulating the tendency disease process and upregulating the body’s own healing mechanisms. Being an Ayurvedic clinician for more than two decades I will be presenting on the epigenetic aspect of the Ayurvedic healing process at this conference.

Topic: Epigenetics & Ayurveda
Abstract: There is an old saying in Ayurveda that goes, “what you see, you become.” It’s an ancient take on epigenetics. If your environment can change your genetic expression, then it seems wise to surround yourself with a healthy environment rich in peace, love and joy rather than stress, violence and exhaustion. Ayurveda is the study of life science. Ayu – meaning life and Veda – meaning science or knowledge. This science has been witnessed and practiced for 5000 years since the ancient Vedas were written. Ayurveda believes that the origin of disease is rooted in one key phrase, “Forgetting our true nature as spirit.” This can be further explained by understanding a little bit of Sankhya philosophy. Purusha desires to know its own nature and merges with Prakriti. What unfolds is the creation of the individual soul. It is believed that disease unfolds when a person forgets their true nature as spirit. This happens at every incarnation. At each incarnation there is a storehouse of karma that is stored in the causal body. When incarnation occurs the ahamkara takes form into an astral body where disturbance originates. Her recent article on Cancer and Epigentics Interrelationship in Prevention and Cure - https://www.journalijdr.com/sites/default/files/issue-pdf/13856.pdf
