Guest of Honor - Bertrand Martin

Picture
Bertrand Martin, M.D., M.P.H. C.Ay. Vevey, Switzerland, Psychiatrist was born in 1945 in Vevey (Switzerland). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne in 1973. He studied Public Health and Nutrition at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala (Master Degree, 1976). The following years, he administered a research project in nutrition in Saudi Arabia and a primary health program in Mali. He returned to Switzerland in 1989 and specialised in psychiatry. Due to his interest for Yoga and the traditional medicine of India, he studied both sciences at the Hindu University of Benaras (BHU), where he followed a one-year course for allopathic physicians (Certificate, 1995). Since 1995, Dr Martin integrates in his private practice the occidental approach of psychiatry, Indian traditional therapies, and meditation.Presentation Topic: “Patanjali Meditation Science, or how to pacify the mind and open the doors of Enlightenment.”
Abstract: The word meditation covers a great number of techniques around the world. Patanjali has in his Sutras the practical knowledge on how to take the path to enlightenment. It is described in a concise form and can be considered as a summary for students receiving a practical teaching by a Master. This text is not understandable if one has not experienced its content, at least partially. This presentation will unfold the practical knowledge on how to practice Patanjali meditation and what are the expected results.

Saturday Evening Kirtan

Picture
Penni Feiner & Sheryl Edsall, New Jersey, USA
Kirtan is a form of devotional call and response chanting which roots goes back over 500 years to India. It is a practice of Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion). The singing is accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming and the audience is encouraged to participate by chanting, clapping, and dancing. You will not be able to resist the urge to join in! In its heartfelt expression kirtan can induce profound states of meditation, bliss and ecstasy. Other side effects may include opening of the heart, and building a deeper connection to you, others, and the Divine. In Kirtan we bring our voices and intentions together to cultivate Shakti (Divine energy), allowing each participant to bring more love, freedom and creativity into their life. Chant has been described as the beating of the heart of the soul and offers a connection to the heart and the divinity that lies within.
