Atopic Dermatitis and Ayurvedic Treatment

Abstract: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is one of the problematic skin diseases effecting children. In Ayurveda AD is called bala visarpa. We can find several references about ad Bala Visarpa in ayurvedic texts. The contribution of our tradition of bala visarppa (AD) is from sri kaikulangara Ramavarier in his book arogyakalpadrumam is still a refence textbook.

The main symptom of AD described – it brings Blisters on the body it is seen more on hand & feet – it causes crying &irritating to the child. The health problems of children differ from adults also, children response to an illness is influenced by age and management of child hood illness is significantly varying. Factors to consider in child illness - Climate, Environment and geography. Prevalence and ecology of infectious agents and their hosts, Agricultural resources and practices, education, economic, social and cultural considerations, stage of urbanization and industrialization, gene frequencies

General cause for AD In children - Impure breast milk (genetic cause), environmental factors, obstetric cause such as taking toxic food in pregnancy and during lactation period. Also taking some drugs and medicines and saffron, intake during pregnancy period, mental tension of the mother.

Clinical classification Depends – Age, constitutional manifestations,

character of skin, associated manifestations - Vatha kaphajam- dryness, itching, Vathapithikam- pain, inflammation, Pithakaphajam- vesicles, pus

Principle of management - Internal medicine to facilitate the reparative process, External medicine to facilitate the healing process by removing the debris, treat the child and mother.
