Topic: Quality of care in AYUSH – 5W1H perspective

Abstract: Quality of care is a key component of the healthcare. Quality is receiving increasing attention in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as the SDGs include the imperative to “achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all”.

What is QoC? - Quality of care is defined by WHO as “the extent to which health care services provided to individuals and patient populations improve desired health outcomes”.

Why QoC is important? - Quality is nothing but doing the right thing in a right way for the first time and every time. This not only saves time , but also improves the health care delivery process. It is more of patient centric and thus focuses on the safety of the patient. This automatically improves the safety standards of the health care givers also.

When? - Quality can be done at any given time. The journey on quality road may be started at any given point of time. The will of the management is the main key to implement the quality

Where ? - The Quality of care can be implemented across the hospital set up of any size. Be it is a day care center, small hospital, big corporate hospital etc.

Who? - The management plays a big role to take care of the quality in care. However, the mission and vision of the quality care is taken forward by all staff from the watchman at gate to each and every person attached with the hospital.

How do you provide QoC? - In order to achieve QoC, health care must be safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable and people-centered.

All these quality programs works on a pre-set of standards developed for the purpose. This quality programs are mainly based on the Quality Management Systems which further depended on pillars like Infrastructure, polices and procedure manuals, Standard operating procedures( SOPs), Medicines and other logistics procurement, adhering to the patients and staff rights responsibilities, Facility up keeping etc. The quality care also involves the constant review of the services provided by adding or deleting the list of their scope of services as per the needs of the community. The Data capturing and its analysis is important for continuous delivery of quality care.

With this background, it can be said the awareness of the quality systems of AYUSH is increasing day by day in all its stakeholders, patients and general public as well. The details of which shall be discussed in detail in the webinar.
