Dietary Management of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Dr. Shilpa Yerme
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a multifactorial disorder characterized by persistent physical and mental exhaustion not relieved by rest. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it correlates with Klama, arising from Agnimandya (weak digestion), Ama (metabolic toxins), and depletion of Ojas (vital energy).
Dietary management plays a pivotal role in restoring energy metabolism and preventing toxin accumulation. The Ayurvedic approach emphasizes a Laghu, Ushna, Deepana-Pachana ahara (light, warm, and digestive-stimulating diet) to strengthen Agni and rejuvenate Dhatus.
The diet should include freshly cooked, easily digestible foods such as old rice, wheat, moong dal, ghee, milk, dates, raisins, and seasonal fruits like pomegranate and amla. Spices like ginger, cumin, cinnamon, and black pepper enhance digestion and vitality. Rasayana foods (rejuvenatives) such as Chyawanprash, Ashwagandha, and Shatavari help restore Bala and Ojas.
