Ayurveda & Insomnia

Most cases of insomnia have a relation in Ayurveda to an imbalance of the three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. Each influences the nature of sleep differently, and their disturbance causes disorders of sleep. Vata governs movement, the nervous system, and mental activity. When the dosha is aggravated, it causes overthinking, anxiety, and restlessness which denies sleeping or staying asleep. Pitta is the wing of digestive and metabolic function along with body temperature. An imbalance of pitta results in over-activity in the mind at night, night sweats, and restlessness that disturbs sleep. Kapha takes care of stability and sleep. Although it is natural to promote sleep, an imbalance leads to slow digestion and congestion causing disturbed sleep. Ayurveda describes the common causes of insomnia as stress, poor digestion, irregular sleep schedules, too much screen time, and an imbalanced diet. The path of Ayurveda towards rebalancing is through diet, lifestyle modifications, herbal medicines, and therapies.
